TORONTO-LAKE SIMCOE - 1952 TO 1954
When the Quotation decided to us: Back on the Farm as the name for this website page, I wanted to know the origin and its meaning, was it blessing or a burden. Keep reading and you will find out soon. To add to my blessing, the search of more material on the matter was very successful and unique. The person who gave all of our friends what many have lost. The person was no other than one of our best Presidents Harry Truman. What he left to us is priceless: The understanding of generations to cherish the past. His Legacy to the future: That`s the meaning and origin of: Back To The Farm!
Inquisitive, an example: Many Years ago I wanted to know the Origin of the words everybody used, O.K. The meaning was clear, but the Origin? A Librarian helped to solve the problem after 30 years. Tell if you know if you do not know, Asked and I will tell you!
After he graduated from independence High School, Harry worked several different jobs. He worked Downtown Kansas City and was a timekeeper for a railroad. In 1906 Harry returned to Grandview to help his father on the family farm." It was on the farm that Harry got his common sense" His mother, Martha, remarked that the years Harry spent farming gave him."
President Harry S. Truman
1882 to 1975
IN TRUMAN`S OWN WORDS:
"I spring and fall there'd be plowing to do. Our plow required four horses or mules to pull it. If an early start was had, about five acres could be broken up into a day, not an eight hour one but, in say, ten or twelve hours."
"Riding one of these plows all day, after day after day, gives one time to think."
"My father was an honorable man. If his guaranteed a horse, in a horse trade that was as good as a bond. If he agreed to a day`s work for a certain Amount of money he`d give give a good measure on the Work"
Downtown Toronto the Global Village!
"T.O." and Chicago are one of the most dynamic diverse cities on the North American Continent. Glob connected. Two vital, multicultural cosmopolitans only separated by 1.5 flying time. Both cities have many financial, commercial and telecommunication centers in their downtown area.
A day after I met Henry the manager proudly showed many extras of Toronto. We discussed his invitation to the horse farm ,approximate 100 miles North of Toronto located on Lake Simcoe between two small cities Barrie and Orillia.(Look at a Map in a recent Website page ) We parted, determined a meeting p Any thing missing, Sounds a little bit strange to be true! A day after I met the manager, Henry was his name, lace for next morning. I was looking forward to a ride into my future, which seems to be a good beginning. That evening I had a long and productive talk with my Protector and Friend slept very well, for the first time in a long time.
We started early the next morning and arrived at the farm around noon .Henry introduced me to my future coworkers and explained the purpose and working of the farm. It was a Gentleman`s farm from in Toronto. The farm was a dairy and horse raising Farm with plenty work for all, 15 to 20 young man and woman. The making hey time was winding down it was fall, but enough time left to participate in the loading and
moving hey into barns or being covered in the fields. Loading was my assignment. Equipped with cloves, a steel hook for my left to grasp the pallet of hey to throw on the wagon. My right hand grasped the strings. I tock off my cloves, was not used to work with cloves. After awhile my hands were bleeding very much. Kept using the cloves on me left hand only. At times off and holidays some of us drove to the nearby cities Barrie / Orillia. We mingled with the local population to have a good time.
Another episode of mine is hard to comprehend. During the hot days, loading hey one gets gets very thirsty. We requested some water to drink. It was already strange that there was no water available. The request denied but supplemented with milk from their herd. I never heard such arrangement. The explanation was as follows: There is much more milk than water and the water is for the animals. the cows. The result of this was on one hand humorous but on the other hand. It is one of the most painful ways to go to the outhouse, which I sometimes occupied for hours. How can I ever forget? The time making hey literally, was passing and the preparation for winter was in full swing.
Lake Simcoe
Very useful and charming
At Winter Time Barrie and Orillia, Ontario
The Farm during the Winter Time:
It was a time of learning and getting to know people I met and worked with. A time of milk by doing as follows: Cutting the ice of the lake in 2 by 2 ft, squares with long wood shoppers saws ,loaded this ice cubes by hand on sleds, which were pulled by horses to small sheds made of peat. The sheds was the storage for the milk the t cows produced as long as the ice did not melted, mostly somewhere around March. There was plenty of time available to us to do as we wished, but if any need arose, regardless what it was, we did not hesitate to apply. By the time 1953 came around and preparation for upcoming year started I decided to say "thanks", particular thinking, dreaming and preparing. However, that wasn`t all we were destined to do. The farmers living on the lake used the frozen energy for cooling there. The time came for me departure, which he did one month later.
Back in Toronto, 1953 to 1954
Henry, the manager drove down, Dunbar Str. one of the best known street of Toronto ,to the place we started, the Scotch Mission, waived and disappeared in the distance or good will. More time went useless down the river, when unexpected a letter from Father arrived. He suggests coming back and talking a little more about my future and his business future. We really never talked in honest about it. Was it my father's idea or was his guide .We received a very satisfactory welcome from the staff of the settlement.
It wasn't like home, but at that time I didn't have a home. Because of Him I never felt totally deserted. What a blessing! Remember some of my telling so you might benefit from it, that it is the total truth. I got going early next morning to find a job, which was necessary for my survival.
I was here to experience the new environment and was happy to find another new Beginning! After six month doing my Job, slowly my state of minded improved to a point were I felt, it is working .At that happy moment,(Few days later)I experienced the worst mood change ever. Lay off. The bricklayers and masons strike and did not need the services of laborers any more. No one could or did foretell how long the strike would last. The first weeks and all the rest this, the Mission and Him were the Ones I leaned on. The never faltered to give spiritual and physical support. I contacted some of friends In addition relatives, none heard my S.O.S. How loved must I have been .Only one heard my signal a distant Relative from Chicago. I already was making plans for the close future. I found little jobs like dishwashers etc. It was de-meaning. I could give so much; no one had use for my talent. It was Divine Intervention from my Friend who never let me down. What do I have to loose? I`m somewhat reluctant, the past reminds on many things, but I will go. Someday I might return and thank every one of you, who took care of me in the time of greatest need.
Before I return to Europe, I must and I will visit Niagara Falls. I have been thinking about all my life.
Niagara Falls. Ontario, 1954
My plan did not include a sudden and premature departure from Canada. I never planned to leave without one of the most famous and gigantic waterfall on Earth. The height is 167 feet; the total length of the brink is 2600 feet and the volume of water flow over the fall amounts to 600,000 Us Gallon/sec.Majesticagara River! Only 1/3 of the Canadian Falls lie within Us Territory. The Niagara River as the entire Great Lake Basin is an integral part of a legacy of the last Ice Age. 18000 years ago ice sheets up to 3 kilometers thick covered southern Ontario. The Niagara is a young river, only 12000 years old. ! In a microsecond geological time it was a brief encounter, a geological moment lasting only weeks, maybe even only days. When it was all over it left behind a 90 degree turn in the river, we know today as the Whirlpool Rapids. Imagine I was there and seen it all. Forever will I remember this visit!
