OCCUPATION TO RECONSTRUCTION
MADDNESS VS. CLARITY SHOULD BE KINDNESS!!
The oldest question: WHY?

Will it be different for sure this time, or will there be more growling and  weeping, Or will abundance be there of  better whine, for all of us to say what is loud ringing The war has shown all of us again very clear, nothing but and nobody was heard singing. Why the fighting in all those years brought only many sorrows and doubt, it never stopped the pain. Why is it impossible to understand for all mankind; at the end we always knew, it is and will be in vain.

THE MORGENTHAU PLAN
GERMANY AFTER 1945

Following the unconditional surrender of the German forces on 8/9 May 1945, the last government of the German Reich, headed by Admiral Karl Doenitz, remained in power for another 23 days. Its members were then arrested and together with other Nazi leaders, tried by the Nuremberg Tribunal for crimes against peace and humanity.
On 5 June the victorious, powers the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and France took over supreme authority in territory of the Reich. They divided the country into four occupation zones, and Berlin, the capital into three sectors. There was Allied Control Council composed of three commanders-in-chief. Once and for all Germany was to be prevented from again aspiring to domination as she had done in 1914 and 1939. The allies wanted to curb her appetite for conquest to war crimes and to reeducate them in the democratic spirit.

The aim of the victorious powers was that disarming and demilitarizing all Germany. The original idea of partitioning the country quickly became no more than 'lip-service to a dying idea' when the western powers watched with dismay as Stalin, immediately upon liberating, that is to say conquering, Poland and south-east Europe, launched a massive operation to sovietize those region.

Around   1943 or 1944, German "Propaganda ", under Goebbels, started addressing the issue of the Marshall Plan. Turning Germany into an "agrarian" country, would have been in time the guaranteed

dead of most of the then still living Germans. That`s what he suggested. Believe it, I was there. We were encouraged to fight to the death, which would be a more honorable way, than hunger to death. Being a Jew, didn`t help. How Goebbels used it? To tell you, would be useless.

Note: It hurts too much, the memory of all this, and much more, puts me in a very sad mood. It is very hard to understand, believe me the second part of this page will be much more positive.
Under Adenauer's leadership, West Germany gained its sovereignty, made an extraordinary economic recovery, and played and played a major role in Wes European unity. Adenauer's accomplishment was all the more remarkable be he was 73 when he started as chancellor. Just a minute, read his age again, I knew he was very mature, but never did I know his age exactly. What a man the Adenauer helped bring Germany into the NATO and into the Common Market. He acknowledged Germany`s responsibility for the crimes committed against the Jews during World War II, and  Germany paid war reparations to Jewish state of Israel. Adenauer and French President Charles de Gaulle signed a treaty as symbol af reconciliation between France and Germany, traditional enemies for hundreds of years.

As chancellor, Adenauer exercised strong rule. He treated is ministers as subordinates rather than colleagues. Adenauer`s action were criticized by his Party and by members of his opposition party He studied law on very good Universities in Germany and became a lawyer. Prior to 1933 he served in Cologne as mayor. During World War II, the Nazis imprisoned him many times. Until the end of the war he was hiding, in a very save place, not far from my home, called Maria Laach/Lesch, a Cath`tl. Monks Monastery. More of Adenauer and Eisenhower etc., in the following "Personal History"

Konrad Hermann Josef Adenauer
1876 – 1967
George Catlett Marshall, Jr.
1880 – 1959
On April 3rd, 1948, President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948 .It became known as the Marshall Plan, named for Secretary of State George Marshall, who in 1947 proposed that the United States provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe. The son of a coal merchant Marshall was born in Uniontown Pennsylvania, on December 31, 1880. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1901 and was commissioned a lieutenant of the infantry. When World War II ended in 1945, Europe lay in ruins, its cities were shattered its, economies were devastated, its people faced famine. In the two years after the War, the Soviet Union`s control over Eastern Europe and the vulnerability of Western Europe countries to Soviet expansionism heightening the sense of crises. To meet this emergency, Secretary of State George Marshall proposed in a speech at Harvard University on June 5, 1947 that European nations create a plan for their economic reconstruction and the United States provide economic assistance. On December 19, 1947, President Harry Truman send Congress a message that followed Marshall`s ideas to provide economic aid to Europe. Congress overwhelmingly passed the Economic Cooperation Act of 1948, and on April 3, 1948, President Truman signed the act that became known as the "Marshall Plan"
Over the next four years, Congress appropriated $ 13.3 billion for European recovery. This aid provided much capital and materials that enabled Europeans to rebuild the continents economy. For the US provided markets for American goods, created reliable trading partners, supported the development of stable democratic in governments of  Europe. Congress approval of the Marshall Plan signaled an extension of the bipartisanship of World War II into the postwar years.

The next few lines are a conclusion of Konrad Adenauer's speech in Berne. Swiss, on 23rd March.1949...The intention of the Allied were manifested in the Morgenthau Plan. This continued until the Marshall Plan brought the turning point. "The Marshall Plan will remain for all time a glorious page in the United States of America". But the change was very slow and the economic, physical, moral, and political decline of Germany which had begun with the unconditional surrender took great efforts to reverse.

My comment: This excerpt shows without any doubt what a person Konrad Adenauer was. He was the Man Germany needed at that time. Sometimes it looked a divine experience, for all the survivors of Germany, happened.

The American Military Governor, General Eisenhower and Konrad Adenauer, the most prominent, political person, were similar in many ways. Both did their job well. Eisenhower's had to punish, if needed, unruly and disobedient, both German's and his own solders, with a fair judgment. A Divine intervention must happen in the first years after the surrender. Nobody give us any food to speak of, nothing at all. The only source available, to a small degree was the farmers. To pay for food was a swap, no money in circulation yet. Exchange with household goods was the source of payment. What had Eisenhower to do with our suffering? We supposed to be get punished! He was the authority appointed start the Morgenthau Plan. Remember? One morning a military soldier drove thru the village and announced an order of  General Eisenhower to come that evening, and any night after, to collect ample food, at the American Army`s field kitchen. Nothing what I would say hereafter on this cannot describe our feelings at the time. That was one other site of this great man. He should punish, in the same time be helpful. As a Governor of our section he was in total charge of war prisoners. Some of his orders were discovered in villages along the Rhine River. The orders reads in part: "...under no circumstances may food supplies be assembled among the local inhabitants in order to deliver them to the prisoner of war, Those who violate this command and nevertheless try to circumvent this blockade to allow something to come to the prisoners place  themselves in danger of being shot......."  How many were shot or disappeared will never be known. I told you so much about General Eisenhower because I understood him and his thought, admired him as a great man and of his eagerness to work with Konrad Adenauer, to help him in the reconstruction of Germany!

The American military changed guard with French soldiers once in a while. Close to our house, a Jewish cemetery was situated. Some bad people want to show, not their intelligence, but their devilish will to create chaos. How and when this happen, we never got to know. The Cemetery was totally destroyed, all stones turned over. The French soldiers did never found the actual culprits and never believed they would come forward and confess. At the time when this all happen, we prepared for one of our most loved fest "Mardi Gras". It would be unthinkable that anyone would deny us the unthinkable Believe Or Not! It did .It was degreed by the powers that there will be no celebration that year. That was not the end of the story. Our adjacent village, after they heard of our bad luck, offered us with to participate in their celebration. The village`s name was Stromberg, which was the same place, very dear to my heart, in which I was taken care of when I was very young. Our babysitters, the French soldiers, were sitting across and watching us. Some diabolic thoughts entered my mind. It didn't take long and the action started. I encouraged my friends to follow and copy my activity. We ran past the Frenchmen, dropped our burning cigarettes in their beer glasses and started running. After a short run, we were caught and transported to their prison, soon after. My father was informed and told to pick me up, if he desires. He was known to the occupation authorities as their consultant on engineering issues. When I was told what was done to set me free, I knew the reply and did not wait for any comment. After being incarcerated for few days they let us go. We were ready for additional episodes to anger them. It did not do any good, but we had the satisfaction that we tried to show them our feelings. It was our youthful thinking.

Another story, there are really no stories but true happenings, which involves my Father and my Aunt, which lived near us. The incidents occurred very early after the surrender and our village was occupied by American Fighting forces, given a rest to celebrate their victory. One day I came home and saw my Father in a conversation with an American soldier about an issue I didn`t understand. The words I heard sounded like brett or bred or......! My Father was standing in front of this Soldier and waved a wooden board, but he could not understand "one word" of the conversation. The Soldier was aiming his gun; my Father was waiving a wooden board????? A took awhile to find out from the Soldier what was actual happened. He asked my Father for a piece of "Bread", my Father came with a wooden board, called in German "Brett". Both words sound not only similar, but exactly the same. Both laughed awhile, hugged themselves and demonstrated to us there is a way how peace can prevail: "UNDERSTANDING"

What happen at my Aunts house was of a different nature. Her house was occupied by the same American soldiers who visited our home. After they moved out to continue their mission, we helped our Aunt to clean her home. First everything went normal as it mostly goes when a big cleaning is in progress. We nearly got to the end and were somehow surprised how good everything went. Suddenly, a terrible noise came from upstairs where my sisters helped cleaning the furniture. Hold on to yourself what we saw, I will not dwell on it, will not make any additional remarks and will not be judgmental: Empty preservation glasses, prior filled with vegetables and fruits filled to the top with F E C E S. I'm only telling you the truth! That was one the occasion in my live (not many) when I was speechless.

The exposure to all this happenings in my early years of my live gave me many opportunities to adopt, or to cope with it. Learn to cope and try to understand, it will be very important to your present and future live. That is actual one the purpose why I started this Website: To leave to all my relatives, particular to my grandchildren a Legacy, and to all of you to make your future a little more satisfying.
