PART III
Waukesha, Elkhorn, Hodunk Road 1972.

The following text will be very much dealing with the mentioning of Hodunk Road Valley. The reason for it will address soon. The Curator of Elkhorn explained the name "Hodunk" as follows: Ages ago one of the first farmers had trouble to get his horses with a loaded wagon up the Hill. He called out what sounded like Ho…dunk, Ho...dunk to the horse a few times to encourage them to get up the hill. Out of this developed the since used name Hodunk Road. The immediate area at and around this very muddy place at the center of the low points called by the Elkhorn curator The Elkhorn Slough is a very beautiful landscape . Since 1972, the construction of two rest areas and the rehabilitation of the existing Road converted into an Interstate Highway numbered as I 43. The attached Image of than Hodunk Road, 1972, shows the alarming sight of a situation, which needed an extra ordinary effort from all involved to be successful in our mission; to complete our goal regardless of possible interferences of any kind. Starting this project proceeded with first evaluating protective Environmental consideration, which was at that time only in its infancy and not much observed. Useful Topsoil stripped, saved for reuse constructing Settlement Basins and many more
Explaining legal explanation of a 100 year Rainstorm.

The attached table shown is an explanation of common used terms of large quantities, frequencies .The second Column consist of volumes shows mm/hr. The 5-year frequency would equal to about inch/hr. The 100 year about 5.4 inch/hr. To give you a good idea how much that is really in actual rain, I like to give you an example from today March 21, 2008, Spring beginning. The News declared an over 100 year Rainstorm in the Mississippi Valley. May be some of you witnessed the consequences on TV and saw the houses floating down the River. This will give a better understanding of what a 100-year Storm really consist of. We had the opportunity to witness a nearly incomprehensible fury of Mother Nature. During the same time last night we were not blessed but punished by mother Nature with the second greatest amount of one day snow in a century 18 inches and a the highest year total of 109 inches since recordkeeping started. There might be a concern with some of you which wonder why so much occupation with Storm frequencies. There is a reason, a very good reason, soon I will inform and enlighten you that the information given on the subject gives a much better understanding, which otherwise you might have missed. The National Park Management composed the table. GIS. Earthwork Continues!
entities to protect the adjacent River from silt run off after heavy rains. While all this was going on, I did not miss to ask for HIS guidance not only for our sake but also to give all the help to his creation. During the first steps on this Project my services in Oconomocs construction site was still required. A few more weeks I can use all my ingenuity and willingness to assist the present Contractor for a save and orderly way to continue his obligation when the Contract was awarded to his Company. The Progress very slow but orderly, the weather seem to support our undertaking and we all were hoping, some praying to protect us from enemy number One, Excessive rain. There is not much what we as individuals can do, say it again Hope is never out of style and we will do our best to handle what ever might be in the coming.
Now the most important work to be preformed consisted of excavating the unstable Mud material and backfilling it with all granular materiel hauled in with trucks. If this is accomplished in a more than normal time, an excellent progress would be accomplished. The Goal accomplished and far from being safe from natural interferences. The geographical contour of the location was of such nature, that heavy rains would be very harmful to our progress. The granular filled placed in the Mud hole rose higher in a shorter time than anticipated and to a degree we hoped to succeed inn such apace. At one afternoon all our hopes were shattered because it started raining without any interruption for at least 3 days, No letting down but the intensity changed from heavy to rapid, never experienced something like this. The contractor was helpless as all of us and only hoped this would stop as fast as it started. The damage to our granular fill was not very important, what was much more and significant the damage this storm did to the exciting Environment particular to the creek, which is visible on the picture. The Settlement basin we constructed prior of doing anything, were filled up with silt in no time and there was holding back depositing into the adjacent River. Certain downward ditches along the slopes all coming together at the existing low point lined with heavy Rip Rap stones dislocated from the tremendous fore by the approaching storm waters and came to rest close to the River. The progress was at a standstill concerned only to minimize the actual harm done to Environment and Construction features .After awhile, when the weather calmed down a bit we continued our Earthwork consisting of building Embankments with earth found on site and hauled in by trucks called, Borrow. We were moving along until another terrible storm lasting about a week with similar
force, duration as the first one. The consequences and action we took we learned from our first encounter. Months later after the project was completed and reassigned into the Office in Waukesha We learned that these two Storms were in the 100 category twice in one year which according to records sometimes happens only once in such a time frame. Management made me to make a presentation with pictures and more including the Table attached dealing with frequency; it was and is still unbelievable. After the meeting, certain coworkers had a little fun started calling me then and for quit some time "Mother Earth".
Attention to Fathers visit clipped, not Ignored!

Due to all the happenings of the last three to four weeks, it was impossible to give my father all the attention I planned to give. He understood after some talking together at home the evenings that a good talk could clear the air some. While the past conversations in Sayn were not the most friendly but at least very candid ones, I hoped that the continuation of this issue coming here would be more civilized. My hopes materialized to a level not ever anticipated or even thought being possible. He started talking about how pleasant it made him to see and hear the man I became. Some how it sounded like apologizing did not dwell on it and wanted not to embarrass him any further. On other occasions, he started the issue again. I assured that the past forgotten and thanked him for all he did for me if even at the time it did not come across a little bit strong. To close the Subject even his comment at that time not the most complementary and did just the opposite and it worked Very well in spite of every thing. Never run across a situation like this again to try this solution. My Family particular the children were busy around him and loved him very much. The older ones had a vague memory when they visited a few years ago him in Sayn. I promised him and the rest of my family, as soon the Project proceeded to a point where my constant present is not necessary any more, will spend more time with all of them. There was more time left to associate with my father in the near Future, he planned to stay awhile longer. I promised him to bring him to the Jobsite and show him the placing of the Concrete Pavement. Being in a similar Business, he looked forward to it, including myself.

The following Web Page, do not miss "Time of Adversity". It will totally change my present plans and future anticipations.

Still confident that God will always be loving and caring for us.

Sincerely,
De` Eljama
