From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
ELLIOT LAKE (2006 population 11,549) a city in northeastern Ontario ,Canada, north of Lake Huron in the Algoma District, midway between the cities of Sudbury Sault Ste. Marie. The city established as planned community for mining industry in 1955 after the discovery of uranium in the area, and named after the small lake on its northern edge. Geologist France Joubin and American financier Joseph Hirshhorn were instrumental in its founding. The principle mining companies were Denison Mines and Rio Algom. The population has varied with several booms an bust cycles from 1950s to the 1990s from over 26,000 to a low of about 6,600. In 1959, the United States declared that it would buy no more Uranium from Canada after 1962. During the 1970s federal plans for CANDU Reactors and Ontario Hydro`s interest in atomic energy led the town, anticipate 30,000, to expand again. However, by the early 1990s, depleted reserves and lower prices caused the last mines in the area to close. In the years since, the city looked elsewhere for its survival, finding some success promoting itself as retirement community and tourist destinations.
Relatively isolated, Elliot only connected to the south Highway 108. A 30 km distance to highway 17 also known as the Trans-Canada Highway). Elliot Lake Municipal Airport has no regularly scheduled flight. Situated on the Canadian Shield, the city was surrounded by a dense forest, muskeg swamps, numerous lakes, winding rivers and hills of Precambrian bedrock. The local forest are mixed tedious and coniferous, with colorful displays in the autumn Local wildlife include moose, white-tailed Deer, American Black Bear, beaver, loon, muskrat, otter, Canada Goose, and lynx, to name but a few. Fish species include lake trout, speckled trout, Rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, pickerel (walleye), and sturgeon. The avg. temperatures – 10.4 C to 28.0 C not a heat wave but very comfortable during the warm season. Until the 1870s an Ojibwa village existed near the present hospital site on the lake`s shoreline. Elliot Lake is home to a large number of Franco-Ontarians.

Some Memorable Episodes!
While still working in Toronto with Marshall, Macklin, and Monahan I met some very nice people, particular a young man called Billy theBushman. It is nearly impossible to describe him how he really came across. For me he filled a void which myself could not fill. Somewhere in the first month while working for the company as a low member of a survey crew the company let it known that soon my assignment to Elliot Lake is imminent. It just happened Billy was on his way to return to outpost up North I accepted his offer right of way and told the Lady about the soon departure of mine, with the promise to get her as soon as possible. On a nice and not so cold morning we departed with Billy`s Jeep to our assignment Elliot Lake. The fastest an fastest route to get there driving straight north until Sudbury, approximate 400 km. From Sudbury Highway 17 West brought us to the not finished Highway 108 app. another 300 km. From

this junction northerly, still under construction and slow driving 30 more km brought us to our destination. The arrival felt more like a homecoming. Very seldom did I ever experience such a warm welcome. None of the people presents familiar to me and they welcomed little me close to a lost son. Billy mentioned we are all friends and take care of each other. I knew it was on Omen. My Premonition never played with my feelings and hoped this time it will be like always. The accommodation for most singles arranged with barrack type structures. Most Families found small apartments at the housing of the miners which supplied by the appropriated Miming Company. The next few days give me an opportunity to meet and get to know a little more my future associates. Benno, which known to me by meeting him while we
worked a little together in Toronto. It was a successful day and I give my thanks to my Friend Jesus, and Maker. My first assignment to be the lowest member of a survey crew did not bother me too much but it did. All that education and this is what I get? Not long did I dwell on it, as it is moving upwards.
Soon after my affairs went smooth, I contacted the Lady. Informed her about coming to Toronto when an apartment secured. That was easier said than done. It was so hard to convince the owners to be a little more compassionate to soften their resistant. I never knew where all this drive came from. The new responsibility put on my shoulders must play a big part on this undertaking. The day came when a nice Family from England, Ralph, Betsy and 5/6 year young girl invited us in their home. Another step forward! Two small rooms upstairs with using of all Kitchen Facilities downstairs seem to be sufficient Betsy looking forward to meet the Lady with the little baby. A few days later, I accompanied Billy to Toronto on his usual office visits. The following day after helping the Lady getting her things together and Billy picked us up we returned in excellent condition to Elliot Lake. Ralph and Betsy received us as known long friends. At this time in my Journey a strange feeling came over me not know what caused it. Much later, it revealed to me.
Betsy offered and liked to Baby sit the daughter of ours. We took the opportunity to go on walks in close vicinity of the city to learn the environment around us. We saw beautiful birds, deer's, and many other species. Being out in God`s creation and have the privilege to admire his work so close, is wonderful. On two occasions came his creation a little to close for being comfortable. On one of our walks, we past the garbage deposited. Out of nowhere, a big brown Bear charged at us. The only available and reasonable choice we had to withdraw. He did not pursue the issue for long. The area around the Lake with abundance of Blueberry did not only tailor to humans but brown bears claimed their part. On a nice afternoon, The Lady and I went gathering Blueberry. Suddenly growling noises and increasing rushes in the bushes announced the present of our friends very near. This time we did not run noticed the bears exchanged some gestures and greetings and everything continued on a peaceful path.
Improved Beach Site
One of the images depicts a beautiful Beach along the edge of the lake. To remember are two different events, which will be always with me when I am thinking about the times at Elliot Lake. A nice afternoon in the summer of 1957 our Family sitting at the pier, located at the lake just playing. Suddenly some prickling feelings occurred at my leg. I moved my legs some and stopped awhile, what I saw did not scare a lot but bothered. The Lady encouraged removing these bloodsuckers. Remembered reading about this and mentioning the best way to do this by touching them with a lighted cigarette. They fell off my legs maybe faster than they attached. Reported the event to the local authority, took the necessary steps to prevent additional
occurrences. Later in the same year unexpected, the Lake level rose very high and the Water supply interrupted. Our Company was responsible for all existing Utility workings and maintaining. A small observation airplane observed a dam like structure at the west side of the Lake. A volunteer group, including me, of approximate 20 people started with the guidance of an Warden and community reprehensive early at a morning walking towards this alleged dam It took us breaching thru a very overgrown and dense forest 3 hrs. reach the Dam. It was the housing of a group of Beavers. The water difference between the two sites of the Dam was at least 6 feet. The amount of Beavers present was hard to guess. On could see their movement and the awareness of us. To save as many possible we exploded a few dynamite charges to scare them away. When nearly most movements subsided, multiple charges placed, ignited in professional intervals. The Beaver dam did not exist anymore. On the way back we had very exciting conversation. Most of us proud to serve the community protected the environment and did everything to accommodate the Beaver family involved .By the time reached the city it was dark to bad we could not see the glow of each individual but we knew, it was there. A few days later the level of the Lake to its normal and the water supply back to its original level.
