Waukesha - May 1958
Page #16 ended with exploring the surrounding of our new nesting place, Waukesha. Today, I want to inform you a little more about the Gateway to the Lake County and Kettle Moraine areas of Wisconsin. Waukesha offers beauty and relaxation, excerpts from Waukesha County's" The Way to Go "Adjacent to the City of Milwaukee, Waukesha – the largest city and county seat of Waukesha County - offers an enviable mix of urban amenities and conveniences.
Historic Waukesha.
Prior to 18220, the entire Wisconsin Territory was home to nomadic Native Americans and European fur trappers and traders. Forested wildernesses and open prairie land stretched across the territory. However, when Solomon Juneau built his home in what came to be called Milwaukee, the era of settlement for the Territory now called Wisconsin had began. Beyond the fast growing "Milwokie" (gathering place by the waters), more population centers slowly emerged along the still well traveled Watertown Plank road connecting the burgeoning metropolis wit western part of what would be designated by the U.S. government as "The Wisconsin Territory." On May 7, 1834, Morris Cutler built his home near an American Indian settlement on the Fox River in what is now called Waukesha. The area began to attract others, and soon the

community, than called Prairieville, was born. In 1846, Waukesha County was formed and –as the county seat- Prairieville was named as the Village of Waukesha, the native name for an earlier Indian village in this locale; the name meant meaning, "burning land". Shortly before the Civil War, Waukesha came to be known as the "Abolitionist Hole" for the community`s adamant support for the freedom of black southern slaves, by using the Underground Railroad to help escaping slaves to Canada. The Picture shown is a very old Building and located in the center of the City. When we arrived in Waukesha this Structure accommodated most everything needs in a household. After all this years we have been living in Waukesha or surroundings, the Building weathered the time very good and most likely will be a long time more.
Present Waukesha
Today (in 2008), beautiful landscapes, intriguing history and spirited people from all over the world, including my family offer residents continuous rustic and urban venues to explore. Waukesha welcomes residents and visitors year –round to enjoy activities in the heart of the community, including the Fox River Parkway and the revitalized downtown. Unique natural wonders dot Waukesha County and its Kettle Moraine State Forest plus the ever-exciting visit to the Museum of Natural History. On the eastern edge of Waukesha County town's cities like Brookfield, New Berlin, Butler, Menomonee Falls and Pewaukee form parts of the Greater Milwaukee Metropolitan Area. A highly commercial yet semi-rural bedroom community, popular among all employed in either Waukesha or Milwaukee. This should be a good beginning describing the past of our choice the place to settle and start to build our Nest. How we want, accomplish it
only the future will know. Any meaningful progress on this issue will be very important and will get all my utmost planning capabilities. The Picture of a most beautiful place depicts The Fox River after rejuvenating the total River Front and downtown Waukesha. All this happened in the last 10 years and turned out very inviting for the residents and visitors. When we came to Waukesha in 1958 the Fox River and a walk was there already in a less inviting condition. We were happy and enjoyed all what God gave us to enjoy and were and will be grateful always. On the other hand the improvement during all this year made us very happy and all benefitted from it in many different ways Future Website pages will continue to keep you informed of all the important or interesting happenings.
First Visit to Office
The location of the Department of Transportation, Wisconsin office for District 2 at the time was not very far from our present place. The one way time to get there took about a good 15 minutes. When I arrived at the office reported to the Secretary, which brought in a Supervisor to guide and introduce me to my future working companion. Every one put his best foot forward and I did not feel at home right away but I knew that would change in time. They gave a grand tour and showed many engineering related plans and scriptures to me. I had no doubt that the requirements anticipated I could handle without too much problems. I was informed that for the first weeks my assignment would be in the
office to get to know my coworker better and the general rules and guidelines. After that my assignment would change and being as Project Engineer Assistant send to a construction site, further from the office. One thing alerted my attention a little more than usual. The way I expressed myself was not the best English in particular the German accent caused some friendly, but still remarks. The grammar of my English was not perfect, as it sounded. Staying around another hour, left my new working place with a very good feeling, and patted myself for making the decision to choose Waukesha for our new beginning. Coming back to our new housing the Lady listened with eagerness and expressed feeling of being happy for the outlook of my new path I started to travel. The picture shown is the newest version of the office erected in 1982.
Planning to Nest
One of the first tasks for a new undertaking, to guarantee success, is recommended to prepare a thought-out plan. Not only for Engineers but also for every person who want to have success whatever one is planning to do. Our present Nest, as mentioned before, is a house totally equipped with all necessary utensils used in a household. The attached Picture is an image how the average houses looked in average income neighborhoods. To obtain the privilege of renting this house I had to sign an agreement for one year. That insured me enough time to see how everything is going and plenty time to consider a plan to get more suitable and more cost effective housing. Not only did I want a house for my Family; however, a dream of mine encouraged not only concentrate on building house, make it a Home. This was the beginning of a plan to follow. During the next month's a research kept me busy to find a fitting lot to start building a house. It did not take much effort to find a suitable lot close to our existing residence. After the normal task, where done to fulfill the legalities we were the owner of a piece a future Nest. It did not take long to have the house
roughed in, consisted of cement block basement and Walls, Roof, with shingles. The finishing I planned anddid myself with the assistance of my new friends. By the end of 1958 starting spring of 1959, our first Nest was close for occupation. All this accomplished with the blessings of Him and with the endurance of my new friends to whom I will be grateful forever. The total finishing of our first house did not interrupt our daily duties to our employer and therefore also to all the people of the State of Wisconsin which we served. Prior to May of 1959 my present House Lord I informed about my armament departure, after he admired our eagerness to move ahead and wished us well. In Following Websites, many more information will be to your enjoyment furnished, as soon they are appropriate.
